Seasonal Changes

November 8, 2012
Seasonal Changes

The building and improvements continue while Amanda, Dan and I continue to take care of the animals and farm the fall crops.  The sweet potatoes have been picked; we have greens, a few cabbages, celery, kale, turnips, radish and carrots for the market.

We have transplanted several dozen red raspberries that had to be moved from the building site.  The blue Berries, horseradish and asparagus beds are looking good.  Hopefully next year we will have some of these to sell at the market. A site has been cleared on one of the front field hillsides for a small
orchard area.

We are collecting leaves and manures to put on the beds for the winter.

The sheep and cattle are moving frequently as they seem to be filling up on the grasses that are left.
We are heading to the Butcher next week. The boys (Tre, Par, Even and Steven) as well as a half dozen lambs. This our first trip there so we are still researching the cost and prices of meat that will be available early December.

The remnants of Hurricane Sandy have cleared most of the leaves on the trees but the dark red  Oak leaves are still are still clinging to the branches and the Cedar needles are orange in the afternoon sun.  Now we can see the Hornets nest that we have been going past on a daily basis for months in one of the Maples.

Miss Shadow the one adopted cat that has stayed close continues to follow us during the day and leaves us gifts of dead mice usually in front the car door or at the back door where we cannot miss her work.
Life on the farm continues to change daily and makes us get out and truly enjoy the beautiful days.
